Dear Friends,
The petition for Daniel’s provisional discharge was presented on April 12 to the Minnesota State Review Board. The meeting was held virtually and was attended by some twenty people – including me and Daniel.
Daniel has been in a high security hospital in St. Peter, Minnesota for twelve years. During this time, we have made numerous petitions for his discharge but have always faced opposition from attorneys for Hennepin and Washington Counties. Making matters worse, all of Daniel’s previous risk-assessments have been negative i.e., his discharge was not recommended by the court-appointed risk assessors. This time, however, it was different. Every single person who had a say in the matter spoke in favor of provisional discharge. As it was pointed out, Daniel has been free of any assaultive behavior for nearly four years and has done very well living with a roommate for two years.
We must now wait up to another 45 days before receiving a final ruling, but it is looking positive. Indeed, it was pointed out in the meeting that Daniel has already been accepted into the group home where it is proposed he will take up new residence, located about twenty minutes by car from where I live.
When the LORD brought back the captives of Zion, we were like those who dream. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.” Yes, the LORD has done amazing things for us and we are filled with joy (Psalm 126:1-3).
By the way, Daniel turned 40 years old on April 6. Cheryl and I visited him and brought him some birthday cupcakes and gifts. It was a nice, hopeful time.
God bless you.
